About Our School
Students are prepared to meet the challenges of today's world with the broad curriculum that encompasses Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Music, Languages, History, and Movement/Physical Education. Learning is both interesting and relevant, and dedicated teachers foster encouragement, initiative, and self-confidence in students.
The Ottawa Waldorf School in Stittsville is an independent school that provides a rich and engaging curriculum from Preschool to Grade eight.
The Waldorf movement represents a comprehensive educational system and philosophy that presents the right thing at the right time, based on the natural unfolding of a child's developmental stages and capabilities. Waldorf education was developed by Austrian educator, philosopher, and visionary Rudolf Steiner. Since the first school opened in Germany in 1919, there are now over 2000 nurseries, kindergartens, grade schools, and high schools worldwide, linked together through common educational ideals.
The Ottawa Waldorf School prides itself on small class sizes, enabling individualized attention for all students so that their unique capabilities can unfold in a relaxed setting.
Waldorf One World - WOW!
Waldorf One World supports Waldorf initiatives in dozens of communities in Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East by providing funds, supplies, training, mentoring, building materials, and emergency pedagogy in times of crisis. Annually since 1994, Waldorf One World has co-ordinated WOW Day - a worldwide initiative through which students and teachers from Waldorf Schools raise funds for schools in developing countries. Since 1994, more than $2,000,000 has been raised through WOW Day activities.
This year, our school joined nearly two hundred other Waldorf schools in raising funds for WOW Day. On Michaelmas Day, September 29th, the children were given the day free from lessons in order to fundraise for a WOW Day project. The day began with a performance of the Michaelmas Play for the school community, after which they rolled up their sleeves and donned aprons to pare and slice, bake, and puree apples for pies, crisps, cakes, muffins, and sauce. After school, tables were set up at the pick-up point where the tasty treats were purchased by parents, friends, students, and past students and parents. After lunch, there were the Courage Games, in which students worked as teams to meet exciting challenges.
OWS raised over $765 for Estrella del Sur, a Waldorf initiative in the Peruvian Amazon which supports children and adults with basic education, handwork, arts, and English lessons.
100% of funds raised on WOW Day go to projects.
WOW Day 2011 Results...
Waldorf One World (WOW) Day 2011 was a spectacular launch for North Americans: 9 USA and 3 Canadian Waldorf Schools participated in WOW Day 2011,
joining one Waldorf-inspired company and one teacher training program in pioneering the way for us to join a 15-year-old tradition of paying it forward and
spreading the Waldorf-love. A total of 222 schools from 25 countries participated in 2011--a record number--raising 239.618,28 ($321,207.93). Extraordinary! More information about the designation of these funds will come shortly. Ottawa Waldorf is pleased to have been one of the three Canadian schools participationg in this worthwhile iniative. The children had fun too.
